About

My name is Nuno Cruz, born in '87 and bred in a small city in Portugal named Trofa. I studied computer science in Porto and it was during this time that my shutterbug was born.

My parents gave me a small Sony DSC T5 in 2006, and I would carry it with me all the time. From the most mundane situation to a special occasion, there I was clicking the shutter away. This annoyed the hell out of my friends, but then everyone loved to review my photos and retell the stories behind them. This behavior awakened something in me.

Camera after camera, my gear got more serious and so did my commitment to photography. After experimenting with a lot of gadgets and methods, my attention fell towards street photography. Something about the idea of capturing daily life, and make people the main subject of my captures resonated with me.

I now reside in Amsterdam and my subject matter has broadened, as one changes as a person, so do our views and preferences. Nature, travel and architecture are now things that spike my interest too and lead me to travel and document other places around the world.

Having made some small exhibitions allowed me to build a good momentum and led me to take photography more seriously. I now do freelance jobs on request, besides my main job as a software engineer, and who knows where this will lead me to...

Exhibitions

  • Streets of Porto, Rotterdam 2017

Starting on February 25th and lasting until 23rd of April, RAW Streetphoto gallery, in Rotterdam, will harbour a small set of my photos from Porto taken since 2012. Focusing on black & white, both cityscape and its people, I will show you what I consider the fundamental building blocks of the city, what gives Porto its character, charm and raw beauty.

  • You are not alone, Porto 2016

My project You are not alone has gained momentum and it is now on display at Catraio Craft Beer Shop in Porto, Portugal. This is a city that gave me a lot, as it was the place where I did my master's degree. The opening could count with a lot of friends and good music, it was very rewarding to see so many familiar faces that have been following my photographic ventures throughout the years. The exhibition will stay there until the end of June, 2016.

  • You are not alone, Barcelona 2015/2016

Porto, Amsterdam, Berlin, and London photos are part of this exhibition where I paid attention to persons that seemed to be dwelling in their thoughts as they walked the streets. On display at Vino y Otros Remedios, a wine in Barcelona, Spain.

Publications

  • Interview on lomography magazine

A collaboration with lomography resulted in some panoramic street photography work and this feature interview to talk about that and a bit about myself and my work.

  • Magazine Street Fight, page 132
  • Street Fight is the name of a Flickr group ran by Observe Collective members where people submit street photography work and they will be paired in a weekly competition where people vote between 2 photos with very similar aesthetics or subject, hence the name street fight.
In partnership with Eyeshot, Observe Collective compiled the very best photos from the Flickr group over 8 years of its activity, and that resulted in the ninth issue of Eyeshot Magazine which includes a photo of mine. That image was selected as the best architectural entry of the year 2022 and you can find my image on page 132, in the spirit of the group, paired with complementary one.

  • Book Stavbařův průvodce Evropou, page 219
  • A Czech book about European architecture features a photo of mine and it’s from my film deviations. The book is called “Stavbařův průvodce Evropou” and it contains 365 European buildings that you should not miss on your travels. If somehow you ever look at it, flip to page 219.
